WHMIS certification and what is it?

WHMIS stands for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. WHMIS is now a global comprehensive training system, with the current changes that introduced WHMIS (GHS) Global Harmonized System. What does this mean when it comes to getting certified for WHMIS? It means that the Canadian health and safety information on hazardous products in Canadian workplaces is not just valid in Canada, but in the United States as well. Our clients in the United States can now use our online WHMIS certification and onsite WHMIS training for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.

WHMIS 2015 GHS: understanding the Importance for OSHA & CCOHS

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is an essential component of workplace safety, particularly for organizations under the jurisdiction of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA & CCOHS). WHMIS 2015, which adopted the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), represents a significant step towards standardizing the way hazardous products are classified and labelled. But why is WHMIS 2015 GHS required, and what does it mean for OSHA-regulated workplaces?

Firstly, it's important to understand that WHMIS 2015 GHS serves as a comprehensive system for identifying and communicating information about hazardous materials used in the workplace. By adopting GHS, WHMIS 2015 aligns with international standards for hazard communication, ensuring a consistent approach to classifying chemicals and conveying hazard information. This consistency not only benefits employees who may encounter hazardous materials in the workplace but also aids in international trade, as the use of globally recognized hazard symbols and statements facilitates the safe handling and transportation of chemicals across borders.

For OSHA & CCOHS-regulated workplaces, the adoption of WHMIS 2015 GHS is a crucial requirement for ensuring the safety and health of employees. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) aligns with GHS to ensure that chemical hazards are clearly communicated to workers, with standardized labels, safety data sheets (SDS), and training programs. By requiring compliance with WHMIS 2015 GHS, OSHA and the Canadian Centre For Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) aims to enhance the quality and consistency of hazard information, promoting a safer work environment and reducing the risk of chemical-related incidents and illnesses.

GHS standardized the classification criteria for health, physical, and environmental hazards, as well as the format and content of labels and safety data sheets. This standardization simplifies the process of identifying hazards, ensuring that workers and supervisors can quickly understand the potential risks associated with the chemicals they work with and take appropriate precautions.

Furthermore, by requiring employers to provide comprehensive WHMIS training, it helps ensure that employees are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle hazardous materials safely. This WHMIS training covers topics such as hazard classification, label elements, safety data sheet information, and procedures for safe handling and storage of chemicals. Ultimately, this results in a more informed and prepared workforce, reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries related to chemical exposures.

In conclusion, WHMIS is a vital component of CCOH's & OSHA's efforts to protect workers from the hazards of chemical exposure in the workplace. By aligning with international standards and promoting consistent hazard communication, WHMIS plays a crucial role in fostering a safer work environment

When did the new WHMIS 2015 GHS legislation come into effect?

In December 2022, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System was amended to align with the 7th revised edition and certain provisions of the 8th revised edition of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). It states that any workplaces that use hazardous products will be required to update their education and safety training programs to help workers understand the current changes to WHMIS certification.

This course will help employers understand and respond to hazardous products in their workplace, at the same time the course will satisfy the education and training requirements for hazardous products for the CCOHS and OSHA.

Who should take the WHMIS training course?

Any person(s) that has the potential to be exposed to hazardous products in the workplace needs to be educated and properly trained in WHMIS, where it be in class or online certification. Learning about WHMIS is not only a requirement in the workplace, it will give you and your employer the necessary knowledge that you need to protect yourself against hazardous products that could harm you and have permanent long lasting effects to your health.
